The Formula for Success
If you’re like me--and I know I am--you’re trying to crack the formula for success. I spend a lot of time talking to successful leaders and while they may say it differently, it all comes down to simplicity. You don’t need to overcomplicate things.
Success isn’t a mystery. It’s less "AP calculus" and more "third-grade math." The formula is straightforward—unrelentless hustle, unwavering focus and being comfortable with being uncomfortable.
Unrelentless Hustle
It isn’t about working 24/7—it’s about showing up consistently, putting in the work, and staying committed even when your motivation is on time out. Imagine you’re training for a marathon. You don’t start by running 26.2 miles on day one; you build up, day by day, step by step. Hustle is about showing up for those early morning runs, even when it’s raining or your bed is holding you hostage. It’s about committing to the process over time, not just the highlights on race day. Apply this mindset to your career, relationships, or passions—progress comes from the daily grind, not occasional bursts of effort. Don’t get seduced by the “add water and stir” to get to where you are trying to go. You’re likely to pull a hamstring.
Unwavering Focus
Distraction is the enemy of progress. You can’t chase shiny objects and expect to hit gold. Focus is your secret weapon—zero in on the goal and block out the noise. Picture yourself in a on the free throw line with two seconds left in a time game. You’re surrounded by distractions—booing fans, teammate’s pressure, the post-game locker room. Yet, you channel all your energy into the task at hand, shutting out everything else. This is the kind of focus that yields breakthroughs. Whether it’s finishing a big project, building your side hustle, or navigating a life transition, clarity of purpose must rise above the noise.
Being Comfortable with Being Uncomfortable
Growth doesn’t happen in your comfort zone—it’s more of an "awkward zone" kind of deal. Embrace the grind, the awkward first steps, and yes, those moments when you're learning something new. If you aren’t questioning yourself, you probably aren’t doing it right. Think back to the first time you tried something new—learning technology or giving a presentation. Those awkward initial moments, when every step feels uncertain, are where the growth begins. Lean into that discomfort. It’s less about avoiding failure and more about embracing it as part of the process. Each misstep is a building block for mastery.
Success isn’t about shortcuts or instant gratification. There are no secret hacks needed. It’s about discipline, resilience, and trusting the process even when the path gets rocky—because it will. The equation is simple.
